Boca Research -- first modem manufacturer to test Rockwell's K56PLUS technology.

BOCA RATON, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 21, 1997--Boca Research Inc. (NASDAQ:BOCI) Tuesday announced that it is the first modem manufacturer to test K56Plus(tm) from Rockwell Semiconductor Systems.

Commenting on the announcement, Tony Zalenski, president and CEO of Boca Research, said: "As a result of our long-standing partnership with Rockwell, Boca is the first modem manufacturer to receive Rockwell's K56Plus technology, enabling testing of 56K functionality. Boca and Rockwell have enjoyed a long-standing strategic partnership to provide leading-edge products at cost-effective prices, contributing to the growth of the computer communications industry. Again, Rockwell has proven to be a technology innovator and industry leader.

"Boca is proud to be Rockwell's first customer to test the end-to-end loop of 56K modem response on both client and central sites. Our goal is to achieve a short, high quality development cycle while delivering the most robust 56K solution to the consumer," Zalenski concluded.

"Boca has a proven track record of integrating technology into high-quality products with a quick time to market. This market responsiveness is essential for 56K deployment to PC OEMs and central site customers," said Armando Geday, vice president and general manager, multimedia communications division, Rockwell Semiconductor Systems.

Boca announced its plans to team with Rockwell Semiconductor Systems on 56K modem technology in September 1996. This technology works across POTS (plain old telephone service) lines and bridges the gap between analog modems and ISDN digital technology. 56K technology is best suited for Internet access and will be positioned as a growth driver for the data communications market.

Boca Research anticipates the initial shipments of its 56K product will commence next month. On Jan. 10, 1997, Boca Research announced an open 56K upgrade policy allowing an end-user with any brand 28.8 or 33.6 Kbps modem to easily upgrade to a Boca Research 56 Kbps modem. The policy also guarantees owners of Boca Research 28.8, 33.6 or 56 Kbps modems an industry-compliant 56 Kbps product as soon as the industry standard is approved. Rockwell has indicated that international 56K chips will be available at approximately the same time as the North American chips. However, international 56 Kbps product and implementation of the upgrade policy will be governed by the homologation requirements of the individual countries.

Founded in 1985, Boca Research designs, manufactures, markets and supports quality, cost-effective data communications, videoconferencing, multimedia and networking products to facilitate the transmission of information on personal computers and computer networks.

The company sells its products worldwide through distributors, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and retailers. Boca Research is a U.S. corporation headquartered in Boca Raton with international operations and ventures worldwide. -0-
