MEXICO CITY, Oct 11, 2001

A month after the terrorist attacks against the United States, the impact on Mexico's economy for the year was estimated to be close to 8 billion dollars. A survey of 20 consulting firms resulted in an average expectation of growth for 2001 at 0.16 percent, reduced from 0.76 percent. This reduction is equivalent to 7.832 billion dollars, not including Mexican Stock Exchange's (BMV) decline of 11.772 billion dollars in value. Meanwhile, consumer confidence for September declined to 49.44 points, out of a possible 100, according to Mexico City daily Reforma's own consumer confidence index. The Mexican Association of the Automobile Industry reported a decline in September sales of 1.9 percent, and predicted a fall in sales of between 5 percent and 7 percent.
