Qld: Reef action urgent, says report

A report says the Great Barrier Reef could suffer coral bleaching 100 days a year withinthe next 50 years if more is not done to tackle climate change.

Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE has released the report by the Australian Instituteof Marine Science, the CSIRO and the CRC Reef Research Centre.

The report says without tough restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions, climate changecould raise ocean surface temperatures by up to 4.5 degrees Celsius.

The rising temperatures could increase the frequency of coral bleaching -- the naturalphenomenon of coral losing their vibrant colours, turning white and dying.

The report says coral bleaching could occur 100 days a year by 2050, seriously affectingthe appearance of coral reefs and decimating their biodiversity.
